How is the NPR Music iPad app different than the iPhone app?

Although much of the actual content offered in both apps will be the same, the NPR Music app for the iPad is optimized to take full advantage of the larger screen size offered on your tablet device. iPad users will discover a more interactive browsing experience, and exciting features such as our new visual playlist.

Where can I download the NPR Music iPad app?

Download the application via the iTunes App Store. Simply search for “NPR Music” and once you have found it, download just as you would with any other application. If you previously installed the NPR Music iPhone app on your iPad, you will need to delete that app first before you can download the NPR Music iPad app.

What features does the app offer?
  • Visually-stunning music magazine combined with live music streams from 100+ public radio stations
  • All the exclusive content that you expect from NPR Music at your fingertips
  • A ‘Related Stories’ feature offering additional content that you might like
  • Groundbreaking visual layout for items added to your playlist
  • Ability to save your playlist for offline listening
  • Recommended For You section offering other stories that you might like based what’s in your playlist
  • Ability to receive suggestions for NPR Music stories based on artists in your iTunes Library (this feature is opt-in only)
  • AirPlay-enabled
What devices will it work on?

iPad with OS 4.3.3 or later. To use Airplay, you will need iOS 5 and the latest Apple TV software.

What stations are in the app?

This app is designed specifically to highlight public radio music programming. Only music stations are featured. For access to a more comprehensive list of station streams, try the NPR News iPad app.

How do I find my station?

Find your local station by tapping the station icon in the persistent player bar at the bottom of the screen. Stations are listed in the NPR Music app alphabetically or by genre (rather than by state). Select the appropriate genre to find a list of available station streams. You can add your favorite station for easy access by tapping the heart icon next to that station. Untap the heart to remove a station from your favorites.

How does the playlist work in the app?

The playlist allows you to select and order stories with audio, then listen right away or save them for later.

Browse to any story that has audio, and you’ll see several buttons. One says, 'Add to playlist'; another says, 'Listen now'; and finally there is an option to share stories. Tap the 'Add to playlist' button and that story will be saved to your playlist for later listening.

You can easily access your playlist to play, reorder, or delete stories by tapping the “Playlist” tab in the persistent navigation at the bottom of the application. From your playlist, you can tap on any story to begin listening. The player will automatically progress to the next story in your list after the first story you selected has finished.

You can reorder stories by dragging and dropping them. Tap the “x” in the upper right hand corner of a story and that item will disappear from your playlist. To remove all stories from your playlist, select the 'Clear All’ option in the navigation bar at the top of the page in the upper right hand corner.

You will also see stories labeled Recommended For You. You can drag and drop those stories into your playlist.

Finally, the 'Save for Offline' listening option will allow you to listen to items while your iPad is offline. Simply tap the "Save for Offline button. Any item not saved will be grayed out when you access your playlist offline. There is also a "Save All For Offline" link on the top right hand side of the playlist page if you want to prepare your entire playlist for offline listening.

How many items can I store in my playlist at one time? And how long will they stay there?

You can store as many items on your playlist as you like, however the mini-preview will start to truncate after 40 stories. We recommend no more than 50-60 items in your playlist for the best experience.

Can I use the application to share content with friends?

Yes. On each story page, you will find options to share via Twitter, Facebook, or E-mail. The share tools are located beneath the Listen Now and Playlist links on the left hand side of the page.

Can I listen to news streams in the app?

No. For news streams, use the NPR News iPad app.

How is the app different from the full NPR Music site?

The app is designed to provide a more immersive and interactive magazine-style experience, with features that take full advantage of the iPad’s touchscreen capabilities.

Are podcasts available in the app?

No.

How do I purchase featured music in the app?

Certain stories have a dollar sign icon. If you tap on that icon, a pop-up will appear to let you know that you will be leaving the NPR Music app and you will be given the choice of either cancelling or continuing. If you tap “OK” to continue, you will be taken into iTunes.

Can I use the app while using another application?

Yes. Backgrounding is available.

Does the application have underwriting in it?

Yes. Though NPR is a non-profit, non-commercial organization, it does recognize the support of sponsors and underwriters with short messages before audio programming as well as graphical banners placed at various points in the application.
