What is the NPR Infinite Player?
The Infinite Player is an experiment in customized continuous listening for NPR programming. Choose from 6 different channels of programming, each curated to offer a distinct mix of NPR stories. Further customize your experience by designating which stories interest you most or least as you are listening.
Where can I access the NPR Infinite Player?
The Infinite Player is available at http://www.npr.org/infiniteplayer/. You will need the Chrome browser and an NPR.org account in order to use the player. Registration for an account at NPR.org is free and takes only a moment to complete.
How is this player different than NPR's Flash media player?
There are a number of differences between the NPR Infinite Player and NPR's Flash media player. One major difference is the audio format itself. The Infinite Player is one of our new experiments in delivering audio via the html5 format. The Flash media player at NPR.org can be used to launch individual stories of your choosing, as well as to create and save a playlist of your favorite stories. The Infinite Player offers a continuous listening experience that does not rely on you finding and adding stories. It's more like a program stream that you can customize by indicating which stories you enjoy most or least.
What features does the NPR Infinite Player offer?
With the Infinite Player, you can:
-
Choose between 6 channels for continuous listening to NPR programming
-
Customize what you hear on each channel by indicating which stories you like most or least
-
Share stories via Facebook or Twitter
Why does the Infinite Player require Chrome?
The Infinite Player is relatively new and we're still testing the feature-set with a narrowly-defined audience before we make it compatible with all platforms. We are likely to expand platform support in several releases this year.
Why do I need an account to use the player?
The Infinite Player algorithm relies on user data (such as ratings, how long you listen before skipping, etc) to give you a cross-platform, personalized listening experience.
Does the player include underwriting credits?
Yes. Though NPR is a non-profit, non-commercial organization, we do recognize the support of sponsors and underwriters with short messages before audio programming.
