  • Access all Planet Money content via your mobile device
  • Browse content by audio episodes only, text blog posts only, or both
  • Download and save stories for offline listening
  • View video content from the blog
  • Share Planet Money stories with your friends and family

What devices will it work on?

The Planet Money app is designed for use with your iPhone or iPod Touch. Your device must have iOS 4.3 or later.

How do I download the app to my device?

Download the application via the iTunes App Store. Simply search for “Planet Money” and once you have found it, download just as you would with any other application. The app is quite large and download will work best on WiFi.

How do I filter content for viewing in the app?

Tap the menu icon (three horizontal bars) from the main screen in the app. Under the ‘Filter Planet Money Feed’ menu item you will see three options: All Planet Money Episodes, Audio Episodes Only, and Text Blog Posts Only. The default viewing option is to view all Planet Money episodes. If you have opted to narrow your viewing to only text stories or only stories with audio, you can easily return to the default at any time by tapping the ‘x’ on the app’s home page (the ‘x’ will only appear if you have filtered your viewing options).

How do the app’s player and playlist work?

If you want to listen to an audio story in the app, you can either tap the Play icon to listen to streaming audio of a story immediately, or tap +Add to Queue to add an item to your Listening Queue for later.

Streaming audio that you are listening to in the app will appear in the player bar at the bottom of your screen. You can pause, play, or scrub forward or backward through the audio. If you tap the player bar, the player will expand to full screen mode. In this expanded view, you will have an option to read the full text of the story and a share option.

You can also access your audio queue using the menu icon on any page in the app. Select ‘Listening Queue’ from the menu.  Your queue will be divided into two sections: ‘Saved for Later’ and ‘Already Played.’

Can I save stories in the app for offline listening?

Yes. When you first tap the +Add to Queue option, you will receive a prompt that asks if you would like to automatically download stories in your queue for offline listening. Select Yes or No to save your preference.

If you decide you want to change this setting later, you can do so by accessing your iPhone’s Settings app. Select Planet Money and you will see two switches: one for auto downloading items in the queue and one for featuring the podcast at the top of the “river” (the app’s visual story stream). Either of those features can be turned on or off from the Planet Money menu in the Settings app

To access your audio, tap the menu icon on any page in the app and select ‘Listening Queue’ from the menu.

How many items can I add to my playlist at one time, and how long will they stay there?

You can add as many stories as you like. They should remain in your playlist until you delete them.

How do I remove items from my playlist?

There is a Clear option for each of the two sections in your Listening Queue. One for saved stories, and one for stories you have already listened to.

Is it possible to re-order items in my playlist?

No.

Can I view video content in the app?

Yes.

Can I use the application to share stories with friends?

Yes. Tap the share icon at the top right-hand corner of any individual story page in the app. You will have the option to share via Twitter or Facebook, email a friend, or copy the story url.

Can I access the Planet Money app while using another application?

Yes. “Backgrounding” is possible in the application, enabling you to listen to Planet Money while using other apps on your device.

How do I share the app with friends?

In the app’s menu, select the ‘About.’ On the app’s About page, you will find information about the app and a ‘Tell a Friend ‘option. Tap ‘Tell a Friend’ and an email link will be created for downloading the Planet Money app.

Does the application have underwriting in it?

Yes. Though NPR is a non-profit, non-commercial organization, we do recognize the support of sponsors and underwriters with short messages before audio programming as well as graphical banners placed at various points in the application.
