What features does the NPR News app for the Android have?

The NPR News application for the Android offers the following features:

  • Full-text and full-audio NPR News stories
  • A ‘My Playlist’ feature to program your listening experience
  • A search tool to find archived audio NPR News on the hour (audio)
  • Stories from NPR’s most popular programs - including Morning Edition and All Things Considered – also easily searchable by topic
  • Access to hundreds of NPR member station radio streams
  • Text and images available for offline viewing In-app subscription to favorite NPR and public radio podcasts

How do I download the app to my device?

Click on the ‘Android Market’ on your device’s home page. Select the NPR News app from the list of applications. Click on 'Install.' The app will now appear in your Applications tab.

How do I add a shortcut to the device’s home page?

To add a shortcut for the NPR News app to the home screen, open the ‘Applications’ tab, next touch and hold the shortcut you want. You will be presented the option to add the shortcut to the home screen.

Can I use the application to share stories with friends?

Yes.

Can I access the NPR News app while using another application?

Yes. The Android allows for multiple applications to run at the same time. Be sure to pause the player before exiting the app if you do not want to run the audio in the background. Once it is running in the background, you can access the player and pause at any time by dragging down your task bar and clicking the radio icon.

Do I have register with NPR.org to use the NPR News app?

No. Registration is not required to use the application.

Can I listen to my local station stream live?

Yes.

Where do I find my station stream?

Click on ‘Stations’ on the home page. You will have the option to search for your station by Call sign or zip code. Touch the Call Sign or zip code. Touch the search box and a keyboard will appear. Type in the call letters for your local station or to search by zip code, touch the number sign at the bottom of the page. Touch ‘Done.’ Your station will appear in the search window. Click search and your station will appear on the page.

Is it possible to save a station or stations as a favorite?

Yes. Use the 'Locate Stations' option in the app's menu to find a station. Once you have located and selected a station, you will see the option to "Add this station to Favorites." After that, you will be able to find any saved stations under the Favorite Stations option in the app's menu.

Can I mark a story as a favorite?

No. Currently, you cannot mark favorites in the app.

How many items can I add to my playlist at one time, and how long will they stay there?

There is no limit to the number of items you can store in your playlist. The items will remain in the playlist until you delete them.

I love public radio podcasts. Are they available in the application?

Yes. But unlike the normal podcasting experience, public radio podcasts are available in the NPR News application on demand whenever you want them. Synching is not necessary; so we’re not calling them “podcasts.”

How do I remove the app from my phone?

Touch and hold the NPR News app icon until the trash folder appears in the ‘Applications’ tab. Next, drag the icon to the trash. This will remove the app from your device.

Is there a difference between the iPhone app and the one created for the Android?

There are some minor differences between the iPhone and the Android application, however the majority of available features are the same. In each case, we have optimized the app to perform best on the particular device it was designed for.
