What is the NPR for iPad application?
The NPR for iPad application showcases NPR.org content in an inviting, magazine-style presentation that makes full use of the iPad’s gestural navigation and rich multimedia capabilities.
How do I download the NPR iPad app?
Download the app through the iTunes App Store, just as you would for any iPhone app. Directly from your device, simply click the 'App Store' icon on your springboard page. Once in the Store, select the iPad apps tab, then search for “NPR.” You can also access the Store via your desktop iTunes client and then synch your device after downloading the NPR app.
How is the NPR for iPad app different from the NPR News iPhone app?
Much of the basic functionality is common to both apps. But whereas the iPhone app emphasizes News stories first, the NPR iPad app gives equal prominence to Arts & Life and Music content from NPR.org.
Do I have to pay for the NPR for iPad app?
No. The app is available free of charge.
Will the app work on any devices other than the iPad?
No. The NPR for iPad app is specifically designed to function with Apple’s iPad.
Is it possible to zoom in/out on photos?
The NPR for iPad app enables users to toggle photos to a full-screen view and back. Just tap on a story page photo, and it will enlarge automatically; tap again, and the zoom-out will disappear. This feature works in both portrait and landscape modes.
Is it possible to resize text?
Yes. Tap the 'AA' near the top right-hand corner of any story and a popover will open with different font and text size options.
Can I add more topic “tapes” to my homescreen view?
These features are not currently part of the NPR for iPad app; we hope to include both in a near-term update release.
Can I use the app to share stories with friends?
Yes. On every story page you will notice options to share via Twitter, Facebook, or Email. Simply click on the icon for your preferred option and follow the prompts. (To share via Email, you will need to first configure your Email settings on the device itself, which you do in ‘Settings.’ To share via either Facebook or Twitter, you will also need to enter the necessary information in the app, which you do by tapping on the “gear” icon that appears in the upper right corner, to the right of ‘Topics.’)
What is the 'Tell A Friend option?
If you’d like to let a friend know about the NPR for iPad app, the ‘Tell a Friend’ option is a quick and easy way to do just that. This feature also appears in the ‘gear’ popover.
Can I log on and use my NPR.org Community account inside the app?
No. It is not currently possible to log-on to your NPR Community profile or to post comments via the iPad app. It is, however, possible to do so on the iPad-optimized version of NPR.org.
Does the app display underwriting credits?
Because NPR is a non-profit, non-commercial organization, NPR programming and tools never contain advertising. NPR does recognize the support of sponsors and underwriters with short messages before audio programming as well as graphical banners placed at various points in the application.
What is the playlist? How do I use it?
The playlist allows you to select and order stories with audio, then listen right away and/or save them for later. Browse to any story that has audio and you’ll see options to either ‘Listen Now’ or to ‘Add to Playlist.’
You can easily access your playlist to play, reorder, or delete stories by pressing the ’Playlist‘ tab in the persistent navigation at the bottom of the application. From your playlist, click on any story to begin listening. The player will automatically progress to the next story on your list after each story finishes.Stories that have played in their entirety are added to the 'History' section of the playlist.
To reorder stories on your list, hit the ’Edit‘ button in the upper left corner of the playlist; drag stories up or down in the list by putting your finger tip on the gray square on the right side of the story item and sliding your finger to the desired location in the list. Press ‘Done’ when you are finished. To delete a story from the playlist, click on ‘Edit’ and touch the small red icon to the left of the story. The ‘Delete’ button will appear.
How many items can I store in my playlist, and how long will they stay there?
You can store up to 99 items in your playlist. Items will remain in your playlist until you delete them.
Is there a ‘Delete All’ option for the playlist?
No. Currently there is no option to delete all stories from your playlist. You must delete stories individually.
Can I read/listen in offline mode?
You can read any cached stories when your iPad is in offline mode, but you will not be able to listen. Once you are back in online mode, topics and programs will automatically update to the latest stories, and you will be able to listen again.
If I leave the app for any reason, can I resume listening to a story where I left off?
No, we were not able to complete work on this feature in time for the first release of our app. The feature is targeted for a future upgrade.
Can I perform keyword searches in the NPR for iPad app? Access transcripts?
No. You can access both these features via the iPad-optimized NPR.org, but not currently from within the app.
How can I find my local station(s) using the app?
Like the NPR News iPhone app, the iPad app provides several ways to find and hear NPR stations. In the ‘Stations’ tab in the persistent navigation at the bottom of the application, click ‘All’ to navigate a list of stations sorted by state, or select ‘Locate’ to search for stations by zip code or nearest to your current location. Once you have selected a station, you will see listings for all iPad-compatible live, HD and on-demand streams associated with that station.
Can I save a station (or multiple stations) as my favorite(s)?
Yes – in the ‘Stations’ tab. Once you have found your station stream, click to listen to that stream and you will find an option marked ‘Add Station to Favorites.’ Select this option and that station will populate your 'Favorite Stations' list. There is no limit to the number of stations you may save as favorites.
Can I use the app to access podcasts?
Yes, and the experience is the same as in the NPR News iPhone app. But unlike the normal podcasting experience, individual podcast episodes are available in the NPR for iPad app on demand whenever you want them. Syncing is not necessary; so we’re not calling them “podcasts.” You do, however, have the option of also subscribing to podcasts via the app.
How can I remove the NPR for iPad app from my iPad?
Simply touch the application icon on the iPad desktop and hold it until all the application icons vibrate. You will then see a small “x” in the upper left hand corner of the NPR News icon. Press it to delete the application. (You will be prompted to confirm the action.)
